Building for the storms, heat and salt we already have

Technical forums, published guidance and applied studies on hurricane-resistant construction, climate-adaptive materials and sustainable urban planning for a tropical island — aimed at practitioners and at the residents who live with the results.

Technical forums and seminars

Our seminar series brings structural engineers, roofers, municipal inspectors and practising architects into the same room to work through what actually failed in recent storms: roof-to-wall connections, unbraced parapets, corroded reinforcement near the coast, and window assemblies specified for a colder continental climate. Sessions are recorded and published.

Climate-adaptive materials research

We run comparative studies on renders, coatings, fasteners and reinforcement in high-salinity and high-humidity exposure, in partnership with academic laboratories. Results are published as plain-language specification notes with the underlying test data attached, so that a small contractor and a design office can both use them.

Passive comfort and energy

Cooling a building by design costs nothing to operate. We document and model cross ventilation, thermal mass, shading depth, roof reflectance and courtyard geometry in both historic and contemporary Puerto Rican buildings, and translate the findings into design rules that hold up after a grid failure.

Urban water and heat

Neighbourhood-scale studies on drainage, permeable surfaces, tree canopy and heat exposure in dense districts, produced with resident participation and delivered to the relevant municipal offices together with the survey data behind them.
